EyeDetect or a Classic Polygraph: Which to Choose

Both methods work, and both have limits. We run EyeDetect, so we will say plainly where it wins and where the classic polygraph is still the better fit.

The difference in principle

The classic polygraph measures the body: breathing, blood pressure, pulse, sweating. The examiner asks questions out loud and reads the charts. EyeDetect measures the eyes: the pupil, eye movements, reading time. The person reads the statements on their own, and an algorithm calculates the result. In other words, in the first case a human draws the conclusion, in the second a program does.

When EyeDetect is better

Four cases where the advantages are obvious.

  • You need to screen many people: 6–8 per day instead of 2–3.
  • The person is afraid of sensors or has blood pressure or heart problems.
  • You need a report right after the test, with numbers on each question.
  • The questions are specific and factual: did they take, did they pass on, did they have contact.

When the classic polygraph is the better fit

Also said plainly.

  • The situation is tangled and needs dialogue: a polygraph examiner can change questions as they go, EyeDetect cannot.
  • The person reads poorly or has vision problems: an eye-based test cannot be run.
  • The client specifically wants a “polygraph”, out of habit or because a third party requires it.

Accuracy

According to the manufacturer, EyeDetect delivers about 88% in screening and up to 90% when checking a specific incident. For the classic polygraph, the literature reports figures from 70 to 90% depending on the technique and the examiner. The key difference is not the number, but the fact that an EyeDetect result does not depend on the mood or experience of the person running the test.

Price and time

EyeDetect in Lviv from UAH 5,500 for 30–45 minutes. A classic polygraph at various providers from UAH 3,000 to UAH 8,000 for 2–4 hours, from UAH 6,000 with experienced examiners. For ten employees EyeDetect is cheaper and faster.

Questions and answers

  • Yes, some clients do exactly that for important decisions. Two independent methods with the same result give a confidence level of about 97–99%.

  • It is EyeDetect with additional sensors, a combination of both methods in a single test. In Ukraine we run only EyeDetect and VerifEye.
